Located in Mt. Airy, the Gertrude Smith House was built in 1903 by the Jefferson Davis Smith Family and is on the National Register of Historic Homes. The house is operated by the Gilmer-Smith Foundation, which was established by the will of Gertrude Smith and remains as it was to serve as a living museum reflective of the early 1900's lifestyle. Open house is held throughout the year and Christmas events are held at the Gertrude Smith House.
Laurel Hill is the birthplace of this Confederate General and is located in Ararat, Virginia, just north of Mount Airy. One of the main features includes a historic summer house (gazebo) constructed of wood poles and intervening root walls located on the front lawn. Tours are available by appointment.
