Historic Rockford
The Village (ca. 1797-1900) was once the seat of government for Surry County when it encompassed modern day Forsyth, Stokes, and Yadkin counties. There are a number of historical buildings that can be visited which house a number of establishments, such as the Rockford General Store, a canoe and kayak outfitter, a North Carolina Civil War Trail site, the Rockford Inn, Rockford Park, and the old Rockford Methodist Church.

The trails are the old roads that the soldiers used which features numerous sites that tell the story of the Civil War. They run from forts Fisher and Macon, at the Atlantic coast to the western mountains of North Carolina. Within Surry, there are three designated civil war sites, one at the York Tavern in Rockford, one in downtown Elkin, and one located at the Battle of Siloam site along the Yadkin River.

Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail
This historic trail traces the route of a patriot militia known as the "Overmountain Men" leading to the battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina, during the Revolutionary War. A trailhead is located in downtown Elkin.
Richard Gwyn Museum
Constructed in 1850 on Church Street in Elkin, this museum is the oldest building to have been used for a church or school in Surry County. Today the museum features many items such as farm tools, textiles, domestic artifacts, photographs and a weaving room.
Donna Fargo Collection
The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History houses an exhibit on the musical career of Grammy Award winning country music star Donna Fargo, including stage outfits, photographs, records and other memorabilia.
Dr. Robert Smith House
Located in Mount Airy, the neo colonial architectural home was constructed in 1910 for the medical office of Robert E. Smith, M.D., son of Jefferson Davis and Gertrude Gilmer Smith. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, the Gallery Group Studio of Mount Airy has various genres of art on display from several local artists. Also located on the the property is the Memorial Park and Gardens.
Edwards Franklin House
This historic home, located near Lowgap along the Fisher River, is maintained by the Surry County Historical Society. It is open to the public from the 2nd Saturday in April through September. This is the home of the Sonker Festival that is held annually on the 1st Saturday in October honoring the Appalachian deep-dish pie.
Eng and Chang Bunker, The Original Siamese Twins
Discover the life and times of the original Siamese twins who lived in Surry County during the early 19th century. Their exhibit is located at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.
Gertrude-Smith House
Located in Mt. Airy, the Gertrude Smith House was built in 1903 by the Jefferson Davis Smith Family and is on the National Register of Historic Homes. The house is operated by the Gilmer-Smith Foundation, which was established by the will of Gertrude Smith and remains as it was to serve as a living museum reflective of the early 1900's lifestyle. Open house is held throughout the year and Christmas events are held at the Gertrude Smith House.
J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace
Laurel Hill is the birthplace of this Confederate General and is located in Ararat, Virginia, just north of Mount Airy. It features hiking trails that included part of the old Mount Airy & Eastern Railroad and plaques identifying where the birthplace stood and Native American sites were once located; a Civil War Encampment is held each year.
Mount Airy Museum of Regional History
The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History collects, preserves, and interprets the natural, historic, and artistic heritage of the region. Displays and exhibitions are about the natural history of the area, the Saura Indians, Eng and Chang Bunker, the way of life and culture of the settlers who came to the area, the granite quarrying industry, life at the turn of the century, and much, much more.
Thunder Road Museum
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Parkway, come and step back into the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's to see how it was done back in the day!
William Alfred Moore House
Located on Moore Street in Mount Airy, this historic Victorian/Italianate house was constructed in 1860 and is the earliest known structure remaining in town. One of the main features includes a historic summer house (gazebo) constructed of wood poles and intervening root walls located on the front lawn. Tours are available by appointment.
Horne Creek Living Historical Farm
This 20th Century Living Historical Farm located in Shoals is open to the public Tues-Sat. Annual events include the Cornshucking Frolic in Oct. and Christmas by Lamplight in Dec. Other annual events focus on the lifestyles of folks who lived on a rural farm in the 20th century including sheepshearing, baking, and plowing with animals. Ice cream socials, music, and children games are also enjoyed. Home to the Southern Heritage Apple Orchard, it is unique to its kind in the United States.
