Blue Ridge Parkway
The parkway can be accessed from Surry for those who want to drive along all or a portion of the 469 mi. of outstanding scenery. North leading to the Shenandoah National Park and south leading to the Great Smoky Mountains, folks can relax and enjoy picnic areas, trails, lodging, shopping, majestic views, historic sites and visitor's centers. Cumberland Knob, a recreation area along the parkway and located in Surry County, is where ground was broken for construction of the parkway in the 1930's.
Cycling
Rural nature makes Surry ideal for biking a long-distance ride along back-roads or a bike trail. Mountain-bike facilities are available in two public parks. Two other destinations for cyclists are the Blue Ridge Parkway in northern Surry and NC's Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Tennessee border. Surry's most popular experience is the Scenic Bikeway which provides over 470 miles of bike routes along rural Surry roads challenging all levels of cyclists.

Fishing
Surry provides some of the finest trout and bass fishing in the region along with other varieties, which can be reeled in at public sites such as Fisher River Park near Dobson, the Yadkin River in Pilot Mountain State Park, the Mitchell River in western Surry County, and a number of private streams, lakes and ponds.
Hiking
Surry boasts a wide range of hiking, walking, and running trails, from small and easy to long and strenuous. More challenging trails can be found at Pilot Mountain State Park where waterfalls, breathtaking peaks and other natural wonders reward the serious hiker. The Sauratown, Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Rogers trails are also nearby. Surry's municipalities, schools and recreation centers offer walking/running paths thaw are open to the public.

Horseback Riding
Surry offers a number of well maintained outlets for equine enthusiasts, especially those wishing to combine nature with the slower pace of yesteryear. This may include a leisurely ride along an abandoned railway along a river or a steep climb along a mountain trail. Some 10.5 miles of hiking/bridle trails can be found at Pilot Mountain State Park alone.

Hunting is available in the various areas in Surry County.
North Carolina Birding Trail Locations
Two birding trail locations can be found in Surry within Pilot Mountain State Park and Cumberland Knob Recreation Area along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Migrating raptors may be observed from the summit area of Pilot Mountain starting in late September into November. A wide variety of birds associated with water may be seen in the river section, including Bald Eagle, Snowy Egret, and an occasional Green Heron.

Paddling
Surry is blessed with pristine streams and rivers nestled in rural settings protected from development. These waterways are right out of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Yadkin River, Surry's largest, flows along the county's southern border, while the Mitchell River meanders through western Surry, each offering spectacular unspoiled natural beauty. This paddle trail along the Yadkin River is an outdoor experience stretching from downtown Elkin to Pilot Mountain State Park. The trail is full of history to be enjoyed by the whole family. Sites such as a major Indian settlement, Historic Rockford, the Civil War site at Siloam, and Daniel Boone's hunting grounds are located along the trail. Fishing opportunities are also available along the trail.
Cody Creek
Located just south of Dobson, Cody Creek is a rustic, stylish destination featuring The Depot Restaurant, the Cody Creek General Store, The Cabins at Cody Creek, and The Wedding Chapel at Cody Creek.
Delayed Harvest Trout Fishing, Mitchell River
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's delayed harvest program is a popular trout program in NC. By delaying harvest of trout stocked in certain bodies of water. The river is stocked with brook, rainbow, and brown trout from March-May, also in October and November. Delayed harvest fishing is accessible in the Mitchell River near Kapps Mill along River Road; use the Surry County Four Rivers Map as a reference.
Mitchell River Game Land
This 1,716-acre game land is located in western Surry County, incorporating a portion of Little Mountain and more than nine miles of Mitchell River tributaries, including Mill Creek. Managed for wildlife, water quality, and public access, the Mitchell River Game Land is currently open for hunting and fishing. Yadkin River Adventures
This attraction is located in the Village of Rockford along the Yadkin River and provides equipment and transportation for paddle excursions.
Friendship Motor Speedway
Located off of Business 268 east of Elkin, this 4/10 mile dirt track speedway is open every Saturday night April thru October featuring more than 80 drivers from a range of auto divisions. Fireworks are displayed after certain races and spectators can enjoy concessions at Big Daddy's.
Carolina Ziplines
Located east of Mount Airy, Carolina Ziplines offers the adventurous souls a thrilling opportunity to soar through the forest treetops high above the forest floor. The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 50 feet above the forest floor and spanning distances of 100 to 1,000 feet.
Delayed Harvest Trout Fishing, Ararat River

Fancy Gap Outfitters provides tubing equipment for excursions and fun on the Ararat River. The Ararat River is a "lazy" meandering waterway which provides a great outdoor experience in the Mount Airy area.

Located outside of Mount Airy, enjoy a round of putt-putt golf or challenge yourself on their nine-hole Par 3 Golf Course. Driving range and batting cages also available.
Primland Resort
Located northeast of Mount Airy in Virginia, Primland is a premier destination for golfers, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Enjoy sporting clays, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. The Highland Course is magnificent and was Golf Digest's best new public course in its category. Travel + Leisure Golf Magazine rated The Highland Course as "One of the 10 best new courses in America." A number of overnight lodging options are also available.
Bregman Pleasure Horses
This farm is located near Pilot Mountain State Park. Enjoy horseback riding, including a lesson, and a two-hour trail ride, with a trail guide along the Sauratown Trail or within Pilot Mountain State Park.
Hacker House
Located outside Pilot Mountain, the Hacker House Trail is sure to please those who are brave enough to enter. The trail is open during October.
Pilot Mountain State Park
Pilot Mountain State Park is a remnant of the ancient Saura Mountains once known as "Jomeokee" great guide or "Pilot" by the Saura Indians. Dedicated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976, this solitary peak rises more than 2,400 ft. Enjoy a horseback ride or challenge the river from raft or canoe. A seven-mile woodland corridor joins two sections of the park. The mountain segment includes two pinnacles and visitor facilities. The primitive river section centers on the meandering Yadkin River.
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing and rappelling are favorite activities at Pilot Mountain State Park where rocky cliffs offer a challenge to experienced climbers. Climbing is permitted only in designated areas.
Sauratown Trails
The Sauratown Trail is a trail corridor that connects Pilot Mountain State Park on the west side and Hanging Rock State Park on the east side. The trail is approximately 35 miles long. The Sauratown Trails are open most of the year to all horseback riders and hikers. You don't have to be a STA member to use the trails. For your safety, the trails are closed only during deer hunting season (mid-November to mid-December).
